Questions & Answers

Getting Started

What is EdgeStudio used for?

+

EdgeStudio is a trading journal for discretionary futures traders. It helps you review trades and sessions with notes, tags, context, and analytics in one workflow.

The goal is not just tracking P&L. The goal is understanding where your edge is real and repeatable.

Import & Sierra Sync

How do I import trades?

+

You can import trades in two ways:

  • Manual import: use Tradelist.txt for historical backfill, one-off imports, or recovery flows.
  • Trade Sync: set up Sierra once to sync trades automatically in real time.

Open Settings > Trade Import for both options.

Getting Started

Which platforms are supported?

+

EdgeStudio currently supports Sierra Chart.

Auto-Context was designed specifically around Sierra workflows, and equivalent support on other platforms is not in plan at the moment.

For base features on other platforms, we can evaluate demand through the community. Share requests in Discord.

Import & Sierra Sync

How do I set up Trade Sync?

+
  1. Open Settings > Trade Import.
  2. Download EdgeStudio_64.dll from the automatic import section.
  3. Move the DLL to your Sierra Chart data folder.
  4. Add EdgeStudio - Trade Sync as a custom study on your trading chart.
  5. Generate/paste your API key in the study settings.

Trade Sync runs inside Sierra Chart. Settings is where you configure and activate it.

Analytics & Series

How is Analytics structured?

+

Analytics is built around two concepts: widgets and Series.

A widget is a chart or table — bar chart, line chart, statistics table, and so on. Each widget is independent. Within each widget, you assign one or more Series to control what data is shown and how.

Widgets also have their own settings (display options, metric choices) that are separate from Series logic. You configure them independently.

The default Analytics screen is the best place to start — it already shows widgets with Series applied, so you can see the structure in action before you build anything yourself.

Analytics & Series

What is a Series?

+

A Series is a named filter set you apply to a widget. It defines which subset of your trades to display. Two Series on the same widget show two different slices of your data side by side.

Available filters include:

  • Direction (Long / Short)
  • Account, Symbol
  • P&L range, Trade duration
  • Time of day, Day of week, Date range
  • Trade tags, Session tags
  • Auto-Context values (Sierra Chart context keys)

Leave all filters empty and the Series shows all trades — that is the default starting Series.

Analytics & Series

How do I create and manage Series?

+

Click + Add Series inside a widget to create a new one. You can build a custom filter set from scratch, start from a saved template, or use the AI tab to generate several at once.

Click the pencil icon on any Series to edit its name, color, and filters. From the Series list you can also:

  • Duplicate a Series as a starting point for a new variation
  • Select multiple Series and use Bulk Edit to apply the same filter change to all in one step
  • Drag to reorder
  • Save as template to reuse the same setup on other widgets

Analytics & Series

What does the AI tab in Add Series do?

+

The AI tab reads your tags, Auto-Context keys, accounts, and symbols — then generates a structured prompt tailored to your actual data.

Copy that prompt and paste it into any external AI (ChatGPT, Claude, etc.). Tell the AI which trading scenarios you want to analyze. It returns a JSON array describing the Series you asked for. Paste that JSON back into the AI tab field in EdgeStudio and all the Series are imported in one step.

This is useful when you want to create many Series at once from a single description instead of building them one by one.

Journal

How is the Journal organized?

+

Navigate by date in the sidebar. For each session you get a split view:

  • Session view (right side default) — daily P&L, equity curve, notes, and session tags
  • Trade view — click any trade in the left panel to open that trade's tags, comment, screenshots, and video

The left panel shows all trades for the day. Accounts can be filtered from the toolbar.

Journal

How do session notes work?

+

Session notes are a rich text field for your qualitative review of the day — read, execution quality, key decisions. They auto-save as you type.

Use the detach button to pop notes into a floating sticky-note window so you can keep them visible while you are actively trading.

Journal

What types of tags can I use?

+

You can work with two main types of tags: manual and automatic.

  • Manual — split into Trade Tags and Session Tags. These are the tags you apply directly yourself.
  • Automatic — split into Behavior Rules and Context Translator.

Behavior Rules detect patterns from simple trade conditions and metrics, such as re-entries or size escalation. Context Translator is optional and is used to translate raw Auto-Context values into reusable tags.

The names above are just structure examples, not limits. You can create as many categories as you want and use only some layers or all of them together. For example, you might use only manual Trade/Session Tags, or combine them with Behavior Rules and Context Translator when you want more automation.

Journal

How does video work in the Journal?

+

Video lets you review the exact moment of each trade inside the session recording. Once a video and start time are set, clicking a trade jumps the player to the matching point automatically.

Video is managed at the session level, and currently only YouTube is supported. There are two main ways to attach it: manual or autofetch.

Manual: paste the YouTube URL and set the start time (the wall-clock time when your recording began). This is the most flexible option. It also works for unlisted videos, private videos, and cases where the video should not be found automatically.

Autofetch: connect your YouTube channel in Settings. The fetch button in the Journal then tries to fill in the URL and start time automatically from your YouTube integration. This is useful when you publish your session recordings normally and want less manual work, but it does not replace the manual field for private or non-listed workflows.

Once a video and start time are set, EdgeStudio syncs the player with your trades: clicking a trade seeks the video to the right moment automatically.
